![]() ![]() “The Lorax” is considered one of Seuss’ grimmest books, but the film, co-produced by Audrey Geisel, sweetens it up with the teen romance and with abundant humor. They live in a futuristic, all-plastic world, but Audrey (Taylor Swift) longs to see “a real, living tree.” Ted’s quest for one leads him to the Onceler (Ed Helms), who tells him about the greenery-filled past and about the Lorax, whose pleas to preserve the trees were ignored. ![]() ![]() It starts with a boy named Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) who is trying to impress a girl named Audrey (not for nothing, Seuss’ real name was Theodor Geisel and his widow is named Audrey). But that can be done in a way that is crass and wholly un-Seuss-like, as it was in “The Cat in the Hat” and the let’s-never-speak-of-it-again “Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” or it can be done with respect and an understanding of what made Seuss a legend, as it is in “Lorax.” The truth is that Seuss’ slim books would work better as short films than as features, where they must be padded with excess subplots and songs. Seuss adaptations that it’s tempting to overrate a decent one such as “Dr. The movies have done such a horrible, Grinchy job with Dr. ![]()
